Back in the 1990s, I didn’t have the luxury of owning a computer thus I missed out on some of the pinnacle point-and-click adventure games. But when I had the opportunity to review Kathy Rain, a video game that oozed out the 1990s feel of my youth, I was instantly curious. Now after officially completing the game, I can easily say that Kathy Rain is by far my favorite adventure game to have released this year and it certainly left me impatiently waiting for Clifftop Games next video game announcement.
I am creating my own original walkthroughs for the games listed below to aid your journey back through gaming history. Read more about the site. A Compelling Story
Kathy Rain is set in the mid-1990s and revolves around the tale of the eponymous university journalism student. Early into the game Kathy makes it clear that she’s a rowdy girl with a sharp tongue, but she doesn’t fall into the character simply for the sake of simply having our heroine with a tough tomboy attitude. Instead, throughout the story, we’re slowly breaking down her barriers to discover her chilling and troubled youth–it wasn’t all flowers and rainbows for Kathy. Instead, she lives a very rough life.
Without spoiling too much of the story, Kathy learns that her grandfather, Joseph Rain, recently passed away and after not seeing her family for nearly decades, she sets off to the funeral. It’s after the rekindling with her grandmother that she learns that Joseph Rain was in an accident shortly after Kathy left–an accident that left him in a vegetative state. With guilt ever growing in her heart along with the journalistic nature being sparked up from her days at the university, Kathy sets off to pick up the pieces and learn just what had happened the night her grandfather had his incident. Unbeknownst to her, this journey she was about to endure would be one that would force her to face her inner demons.
If you were fans of the psychological thriller drama Twin Peaks then this is one game right up your alley. Kathy Rain is set in a small town with a cast of oddball characters, but within its story and relaxing to a downright unsettling soundtrack, you will find it tough to break off from this game.
Mature Themes
Going off on the story once again, it’s clear that Kathy Rain doesn’t cater for a younger audience. You’ll quickly find taboo subjects that are not seen handled quite in the same matter Clifftop Games touches upon. While some may not find an issue with these matters, others may take issue with them. Furthermore, a younger audience may find some storyline points difficult to relate to purely because of the time period Kathy Rain is set in. This could go from having to leave one area to reach another in order to make a phone call to even the use of a Dictaphone.
As mentioned earlier, Kathy Rain is a point-and-click adventure. Throughout the game, players will be left to explore various items scattered about the room or even combine an item to correctly solve a puzzle. Speaking of puzzles, the game does an excellent job at tossing out just enough clues for players to correctly solve a puzzle before becoming too perplexed.
A Nice Challenge
These puzzles may present themselves with no means of completion until you obtain all the pieces. This usually means going back and forth to the oddball cast of characters in order to get just enough answers in order to progress. Admittedly, there were a few times that I simply could not figure out how to continue, and luckily the walkthrough supplied by the publisher got me right back on track. Oftentimes the answers were laid out before me, but I simply couldn’t get my head around the answer. This wasn’t a massive issue–instead, it added to the challenge and gave me a reason to retrace my steps or read something a bit more carefully than before.
Fantastic Voice Acting
Voice acting for the game, in my opinion, was spot-on. There were no issues making out just what everyone was saying and their tone or demeanor helped greatly in keeping the grim atmospheric tale rolling along.
My only complaint about Kathy Rain is the game is too short. Kathy Rain ends nicely, though there is certainly room to keep the story going. All in all, after the credits finished, I wasn’t satisfied, I simply needed more as Kathy Rain as it easily hooked me into story.
Final Verdict
10/10
By all means, if you are ever in the mood for a gripping tale and yearn for the days of the classic point-and-click genre then I highly recommend giving Kathy Rain a playthrough.
Kathy Rain is developed by Clifftop Games and published by Raw Fury. The game is available for $14.99 through Steam. A copy of the game was provided by the publisher.
Table of Contents.Game Introduction – ResonanceWelcome to the Resonance walkthrough on Gamezebo. Resonance is a point-and-click adventure game played on created by Xii Games and published by Wadjet Eye Games. This walkthrough includes tips and tricks, helpful hints, and a strategy guide on how to complete Resonance. General Tips. Basic gameplay for this game is pretty standard for a point-and-click adventure, but with some creative additions. Interactive areas and items are indicated with pop-up messages. Left click on an object to interact with it or pick it up.
Right click on an object to get more information. The menu bar pops down when you move your cursor to the top left of the screen. The menu bar consists of the following sections:. Main Menu: The main menu can be accessed by clicking the red power icon on the menu bar.
Go to the main menu to save and load games, change the volume, view your achievements or toggle “bloopers” (outtakes of voiceovers you can play). Character Selection: Move your cursor to the right side of the menu bar to reveal a panel with icons for all available characters you can play with. The character you’re currently playing with is indicated with a yellow dot. To change characters simply click on the desired character’s icon. INV: Your inventory. This is where items you pick up are stored.
To use an item you need to click and drag it to the desired location. Sometimes you need to combine two items in the inventory before you can use them in the scene. Right click an item to get more information on it. Each character has their own inventory, but many items can be swapped around by simply dragging them onto another character. LTM: Long term memory. Important scenes are automatically stored in your LTM. Some scenes are specific, individual memories for one character, others are memories that are shared by all.
Click on a memory to watch the scene again or to get additional information. LTM entries can be used in conversation (see below) and are often essential for continuation of the game. STM: Short term memory. The STM is character-specific. You can store “memories” of objects or people in your STM to use in conversation later on.
All interactive objects and areas can be stored in the STM. When you click on something in a scene and hold down your mouse button, the STM will automatically scroll down and you can drag the object to one of the slots. There are about ten STM slots per character, but you can overwrite items when necessary.
Dialog is not only excellent, but also very important in this game. To get ahead in the game you often have to talk to the right people about the right things.
In most conversations it’s safe to just go through all the options. However, there are a couple of conversations with “deal breaker” options that immediately end the conversation. In these instances you will need to replay the conversation and try different options. To initiate a conversation simply click on a character or drag and drop an item onto the character to discuss that item. You can drag and drop items directly from the scene, or from your LTM, STM or inventory. You can use the STM to store items you want to talk about to someone who is not in the current scene. Quite often you will see a black “drop box” at the top of the dialog box.
You can put items from your STM, LTM or inventory in this box to talk about them. Just click on an item to make it appear in the box, or manually drag and drop it into the box. Hints: Whenever you’re stuck, click on one of the four main characters to initiate a conversation and ask them if they have any thoughts on the situation. Hints can be very vague but should be just enough to point you in the right direction. Have all your main characters talk to each other for different perspectives on the situation.
Strategy: Try everything! Talk to people about everything in the room or even things you’ve seen in other locations. Try inventory items on each other and on interactive places in the scene.
If one character can’t do it, maybe someone else can. Be creative, think big!
This game isn’t easy, but ultimately it is all quite logical (albeit in retrospect). Note: This walkthrough is still missing information on the “Blackmailer”, “Hippocrates” and “Map Master” achievements (see “Achievements” below).
The walkthrough also only contains 335/340 points. If you know how to get these achievements or find the last five points, please leave a message on the forum and I will have the walkthrough updated.Meet the GangEd’s Apartment.
